Flooding in Niles is as bad as in 2008, said Steve Vinezeano, interim village manager, Thursday morning.

"We know that based on the flooding that has occurred," he said.

The village opened its Emergency Operations Center about 8 a.m. Residents can call 847-588-8000, and they will be routed to the center.

Police and public works crews are working to block off impassable streets.

Garbage scheduled to be picked up today will still be picked up, Vinezeano said.

For people wishing to dispose of flood-damaged items, they will have to put it the regular garbage pick up this week or next week. There will not be a special garbage pickup, he indicated.

Flooding has occurred on Milwaukee Avenue, Howard Street and Harms Road, among other places.
