American Legion Hosts Thanksgiving For Naval Recruits

The Morton Grove American Legion Post 134 will host 50 recruits from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center on Thanksgiving Day. The Legion will provide a full day of activities for the young recruits, most of whom will be far away from home on this special holiday. A traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be served along with a variety of foods and desserts.

It will be "all hands on deck" as Legionnaires, Women's Auxiliary, Sons of The Legion and other volunteers take time from their own families to serve and entertain the sailors. Donated goods and services include free bowling for the recruits courtesy of Classic Bowl in Morton Grove; a performance from the Chicago Rush Dancers; a sing-along provided by the Chicago Metro Harmonic Society; and transportation provided by the Cook County Bus Company. AT&T will donate free national and international telephone service that will allow the recruits to call their families and loved ones all around the world. Best Buy in Arlington Heights and Euclid Video in Mount Prospect will provide gifts. Food will be donated by Maiers Bakery in Morton Grove; Deans Foods in Franklin Park; Jon Eggers from Costco in Niles; Village Creamery in Niles; Produce World in Morton Grove; Chuck Murphy of Jewel Foods in Randhurst Mall; and Pennant Foods in Northlake. Thanks to Bud Swanson of the Morton Grove Civic Center and to Bill Klewitz who will provide photographic services.

Donations are still being accepted. For more information about the event or to donate goods or services please call (847) 965-9503 or Joe Hedrick at (847) 212-5336.  Email: hedrico@juno.com
