Frank Silvio has shown up, pastries in hand, for the Morton Grove Farmers Market and numerous community events.

Now that Silvio, a co-owner of Maier's Bakery, is fighting a serious illness, fellow Morton Grove residents have organized a fundraiser Friday, June 28 at Dairy Queen, 7011 W. Dempster, Niles (near Waxberg's Walk Shoppe and Panera) from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Dairy Queen will donate proceeds from meals and snacks to a fund organized to help pay Silvio's medical bills and for the future college education of his two young children.

Morton Grove Mayor Dan DiMaria sent out the following in an email:
"Frank is bravely battling an aggressive form of bone cancer. His prognosis is not good. The pain and pressure from the tumors make it very difficult for him to work, and although he does his best, his medical and family bills are overwhelming.

"Kristina Otte, founder of the Morton Grove Farmers Market, is another person who values our community. When she sees a need, she springs into action. Kristina has started friend-to-friend grassroots campaign to help Frank and his family."

Residents may also contribute to the Frank Silvio Benefit Fund at either of the two MB Financial locations in Morton Grove: on Dempster Street or Waukegan  Road.

Friends have set up a Frank Silvio Benefit Fund Facebook page.
