American Legion Hosting Navy Recruits For Thanksgiving In Morton Grove

As they have done before, Morton Grove American Legion members do a blowout Thanksgiving Day celebration for about 50 Navy recruits from Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Come by and say hi to them.

For weeks now, members of Morton Grove's American Legion Post 134 have been making preparations to host a very elaborate Thanksgiving dinner--for 50 guests.

Although they've never met these 50 people--young Navy recruits from Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Waukegan--they hope to have them feel like family by the end of the day. They have managed to do that for the past seven years by putting out a genuine welcome and creating lots of warm feelings.

It's a day filled with joy, jokes, music, conversation, a performance and of course, lots of turkey, mashed potatoes, pie and all the trimmings. They'll also get a chance to wander off by themselves to use the Internet (possibly for the first time since starting boot camp), watch movies and play video games.

The American Legion welcomes citizens to donate to the cost of the provisions, and to come out that day to greet the recruits.

Here is more information from Post 134.

On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, the Morton Grove American Legion Post 134 will be celebrating their 7th Adopt a Sailor Navy Day.  We will host 50 recruits from Great Lakes.

They will arrive at 8 a.m. by bus, donated by the Golf School District 67, who will also return them by 5 p.m.

They will be greeted by legion members, village officials, friends, and whomever else wishes to greet them and thank them for their service.  There will be refreshments donated by legion members, friends, and local merchants.

They will be served a full Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.  Entertainment will be available along with nationwide long distance and international phone service all day long, compliments of AT&T.  Computers will also be available.  They will have the opportunity to talk and email their loved ones throughout the day.

After graduation many of these young men and women will be sent into harm's way.  The day's events will be filmed and a DVD will be  sent to their families.

We owe them a thank you for their service. Let's show them a beautiful day to remember.

We also contribute to and support the Comfort/Wounded Warrior Fund with our donations. We take pride in entertaining our troops each year. We want to continue to support them if they should fall victim in harm's way.  Anyone wishing to make a donation please make checks payable to: Thanksgiving Committee, American Legion Post 134. Address:American Legion Post 134, 6144 Dempster St., Morton Grove, Il.60053.
