Effects of herbicide spraying in Morton Grove's Miami Woods still noticeable six weeks later
Six weeks after an herbicide spraying designed to chase out non-native plant species, the effects are still evident in a small section of Morton Grove's Miami Woods.
In Cook County's forest preserves, the thickest woods are not necessarily the healthiest. Invasive exotic species such as garlic mustard and the shrubby tree, European buckthorn, crowd out native plant species and compromise botanical diversity. Burns and cuttings are commonly carried out by volunteers, but on May 11, herbicide was sprayed in a section of Morton Grove's Miami Woods north of Oakton Street. Six weeks later, there was little undergrowth beneath the trees, save a few patches of mayapples--which are a native species. Twenty percent of Morton Grove is forest preserve land.
