See Who Came To Niles Preschool Fair

Parents of young children had plenty of preschool representatives to talk to at Wednesday's Annual Preschool and Daycare Fair at the Niles Library.

Clara Sheffer, the youth services librarian who organized the fair, said approximately 30 exhibitors set up tables in the meeting room, and about 70 parents and individuals came out to browse for a school for their young children.

"It definitely shows there are people who want to research a preschool for their kids," said Sasha Vasilic, the library's publicity and graphic design coordinator.

While the library has held the fair in the past, it tried something new this year. Social workers from The Family Room in Evanston talked with parents about what to look for in a preschool.

Vasilic said he noticed that while exhibitors have played video footage of their preschools on laptops in the past, this year he noticed that many of them had photos or video on tablets to show to parents.

Sheffer noticed a different trend, one more related to the economy than to technology.

"There's a concern among patrons about money," she said. "I had a request for free preschool. I never got questions about that before.

"We live in an extremely diverse community."

She noted that the library still has a list of the exhibitors, with contact information, for parents who may have missed the fair, and that brochures from the exhibitors will be available in the library's children's department.
