An Inspirational Grammys Moment for Caregivers

An inspirational moment occurred on the Grammys when Glen Campbell sang Rhinestone Cowboy. The legendary country singer revealed in June of 2011 that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Those who watched the Grammys on Sunday night were treated to numerous wonderful performances.  For me one of the most inspirational moments was watching Glen Campbell sing Rhinestone Cowboy.

The legendary country singer revealed in June of 2011 that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.  According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.  Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment.”

Whether it’s through a parent, grandparent, relative, or a friend, everyone has had their life touched by Alzheimer’s Disease.  Many of us are or have been caregivers for an individual with memory loss.  At Home Instead Senior Care we see firsthand in the Chicago area the impact it has on victims and their families.

After watching Glen Campbell Sunday night, I thought about how fantastic he was and still is.  It struck me how important it is to remember that with the right treatment and support individuals with the disease can enjoy life and continue being productive.  Glen Campbell continues to perform regularly, like this performance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlgq43Kapnk) on Ellen in October. Given the far reach of the disease and how many families are affected by it, it’s an important and uplifting lesson to keep in mind.
