Marilyn's Restaurant - A Morton Grove tradition

Table for Two - Dining Out In Morton Grove visits Marilyn's restaurant for a hearty breakfast and much, much more.

Marilyn's, one of Morton Grove's long-term establishments is a family restaurant.

Many times, there is a distinction made by foodies between "Fine Dining" and "Family Restaurants"and this is unfortunate. At Marilyn's you will get some very fine dining served with family friendliness instead of white tablecloth attitude.

As with many family restaurants, you will find "American diner food" such as hamburgers, french fries, club sandwiches, meat loaf and the like and much of the food is grilled. The real star here, however, is breakfast; eggs, (whether up, over, in an omelette or a skillet), waffles, French toast or pancakes along with the usual breakfast sides make the "most important meal of the day" a great reason to visit Nick and Mike and the crew.

A perticular favorite of mine when we visited was the creation know as Baked Oatmeal. Somewhere between an oatmeal cookie and bread pudding, this stick-to-your-ribs feast has oatmeal; brown sugar, cinnamon and apples mingled with a loaf of good old-fashioned oaty goodness.

Pancakes are quick breads that are probably the earliest and most wide-spread types of cereal food eaten since prehistoric times where dried carb-rich seed flours mixed with eggs or milk were baked on hot stones over an open fire to form a nutricious meal. In ancient Greece, pancakes called "tiganites" were made with wheat flour; olive oil, honey and curdled milk. They were usually drizzled with honey and cinnamon and sometimes topped with cheese; nuts, fruits or vegetables.

At Marilyn's you can get the modern cousins of tiganites stuffed with ricotta cheese and blueberries or strawberries or opt for the "Elvis Special" waffle stuffed with peanut butter; bananas and crispy bacon.

No matter what you choose, you won't go away hungry.
