$1,500 Cash, Diamond Rings Go Missing

A Niles woman, 50, reported to police Jan. 29 she was missing from her purse about $1,500 cash, two gold and diamond rings (one of which was her wedding ring) and a gold chain with a gold cross pendant.

She had seen the money in her purse the day before, and the jewelry three days prior. She suspects a 26-year-old female family member, who she says has a key to her home and sometimes stays there, and at other times stays with a boyfriend in Skokie. On Jan. 29, she was in her kitchen and, from the window, saw the 26-year-old outside with her boyfriend. They did not try to come in at that time.

The woman also said that sometime in the past week, someone scratched "I hate you" into her vehicle's driver's side door. The victim said she's concerned about the offender and does not want her arrested, but wants her to get help. Police made a referral to Niles Family Services

Driver charged with DUI after rear-ending vehicle on Harlem

Cody Walker, 27, of Harwood Heights was charged with DUI Jan. 30 just after 4 a.m. after Niles police arrived at a vehicle crash at Harlem and Milwaukee Avenues.

According to the report, Walker told police he was driving north on Harlem Avenue when the light turned yellow, and he thought the vehicle in front of him was going to keep going through the yellow light. Then he realized that vehicle was closer than he thought, so he slammed on his brakes, but due to the wet pavement, the size of his vehicle and knobby tires, he didn't stop in time and struck the other vehicle.

When asked where he was coming from, he said he had been at a bar, and had one, maybe two beers, according to the report. The officer could smell alcohol on his breath, even though he was chewing gum, police said, and Walker showed impairment on standard field sobriety tests. He was also cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. His court date is March 13 at the Cook County courts in Skokie.

Locker burglarized at fitness center

On Jan. 30, a Libertyville man, 30, told police he placed his jacket into a locker of a fitness center in the 6300 block of Touhy and left the locker closed but not locked at about 6 p.m. When he returned at about 8:30 p.m., his wallet, containing $100 cash and credit cards, and two mobile phones were missing.

In a criminal damage to property case Jan. 30 in the 6600 block of Woodriver Drive, just after noon, a 59-year-old woman said that when she got her mail, she saw someone had written “I will kill you!” in marker on the exterior wall of the house. Police made a report.
