Dog Kills Dog, Tougher Rules Proposed

A Morton Grove woman who witnessed a Skokie pit bull attack and kill her dog was distraught; Skokie is considering tougher rules for dog owners.

 

After a Morton Grove dog was attacked and killed by a dog from Skokie last month, Skokie is considering tougher measures to regulate aggressive dogs, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"It was an unprovoked attack," said Morton Grove Police Commander Paul Yaras.

"The Skokie dog was off the leash and away from the house--a stray at that point."

The Skokie dog, a pit bull, was not aggressive to people, and ran away from police when they arrived after the attack, he said.

The owner of the dog who was attacked and killed "was beside herself. She witnessed the whole attack," Yaras said.

Skokie police eventually found the attacking dog, and Yaras said they were very helpful. Morton Grove issued citations, and now Cook County has gotten involved, he said.

According to the Tribune, Skokie is considering an ordinance that would require owners of aggressive dogs to take training, keep their pets in enclosures and have them neutered. It would also raise the fine to $500 if the dog commits an attack.
