After Striking Fence, Fire Hydrant, Driver Charged With DUI

After crash, he tried to push air bag back into steering wheel.

Mathew Kuruvilla, 48, of Des Plaines was charged with DUI after police patrolling in the 7300 block of Milwaukee Avenue, Niles, spotted him swerving lanes at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday.

Police turned on their emergency lights to try to stop him, but he kept going and his vehicle jumped the curb, drove onto the sidewalk and struck a fence, a fire hydrant and a utility pole. Police said that when they approached, Kuruvilla was trying to push the deployed air bag back into the steering wheel. His wife, in the front passenger seat, was crying.

Police asked him to exit the vehicle and eventually had to pull him out. Both Kuruvilla and his wife refused treatment from Niles Fire Department paramedics. According to police, Kuruvilla could not perform field sobriety tests. His court date is Dec. 12 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.
