Angry Suitor Uses Gun To Threaten Women

After he tried to ask a woman out and her friend mocked him, he displayed a gun and threatened the women, police said. An arrest is merely an accusation and not evidence of a conviction.

Jonathan Veloria, 25, of North McVicker Avenue, Chicago, was charged with assault and two counts of disorderly conduct Sunday at 4:50 a.m. at a restaurant in the 6700 block of Touhy Avenue.

Police responded to a report of a person with a gun, and once they arrived, secured the restaurant and determined the person was not at the scene. After interviewing two people, a 27-year-old woman and a 20-year-old woman, they determined that before they arrived at the restaurant, the two women and Veloria  had been at a bar. The 27-year-old woman said she had known Veloria for about six months, and that after she left the bar he tried to call her several times to meet up with her, police said. During one of those phone calls, a 25-year-old woman grabbed the phone and told Veloria the 27-year-old woman he was pursuing did not want to talk to him, according to the report.

Veloria then arrived at the restaurant on Touhy where the women were seated at a table, and demanded "who was the one mocking me on the phone?", according to police.

Police said Veloria took out what appeared to be a hand gun, racked the slide of the gun, said "I will be waiting outside" and exited the restaurant. An employee of the restaurant called police.

After police arrived, a customer in the restaurant's drive -through lane advised them he saw Veloria throw something in the grass on the east side of the building, they said, adding police located a BB gun there.

Police phoned Veloria, who told them he would be at his home, they said, and they arrested him there.

His court date is Aug. 28 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.
