Armed Robbers Attack, Stab Niles Police Employee

Assailants flee with deposit bags of cash from village.

Two men stabbed a civilian employee of the Niles Police Department on Tuesday morning, threatened him with a gun and pepper-sprayed him before making off with deposit bags that the employee was about to bring to a bank, according to Niles Police.

The employee, 53, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and is in stable condition.

The employee had been making routine rounds to Village of Niles offices and locations to pick up cash and deposit it at the bank, said Sgt. Robert Tornabene of the Niles Police Department. He had the deposit bags in his vehicle and was on the usual route.

The incident began at about 9:40 a.m. when a man approached the employee, who was driving a Village of Niles vehicle, at a stop sign at Davis Street and Grace Avenue in Niles to ask for directions.

The intersection is immediately south of Golf Mill Park, which, in turn, is directly south of Golf Mill Shopping Center.

A second man approached the employee's vehicle, displayed a knife and demanded the money, according to police. The man stabbed the employee in the shoulder. The employee later said the attackers shoved a gun in his face and pepper-sprayed him.

The attackers grabbed the deposit bags and fled, police said.

Although Niles Police have not released a description of the attackers, Tornabene said information has been provided to investigators. He would not say if anyone witnessed the incident.

Niles Police said they have no suspects in custody.
