Champagne Theft Results in Felony Charge

Markel Williams, 38, of Elmhurst, was charged with Class 4 felony retail theft May 24 at a store in the 8700 block of Dempster, after an employee saw him on video in the cosmetics aisle, concealing seven bottles of Moet Champagne, one bottle of Grey Goose vodka and one bottle of Chivas Regal whiskey, with a cumulative value of $333, in his backpack, according to a report.  The employee tried to notify the store’s security agent at about the same time the security agent also noticed Williams and heard bottles clinking in his backpack, according to police. The security agent followed Williams as he tried to exit without paying and set off sensors, and then the agent approached Williams, recovered the bottles and called police.
Because Williams was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections, an Assistant State’s Attorney approved a felony charge. His court date is pending.
