Child Finds Drugs On Niles Playground

Police responded to a school in the 9400 block of Hamlin May 3 just after 8:30 a.m. and the principal told them a student had found a blue leopard-print sunglass bag containing a green leafy substance and a pipe of the drug paraphernalia type. Police field-tested the green leafy substance, and the results were positive for marijuana. It had a weight of .5 grams. Police inventoried the items and marked them for destruction. The school educates children from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Man charged with felony DUI; had no driver's license

Elia Benevides-Jimenez, 24, of Chicago was charged with felony DUI and Aggravated DUI after police saw his Chevrolet Blazer veering from lane to lane as it traveled southeast-bound on Milwaukee Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. May 6. Police stopped the driver, Benevides-Jimenez, who said he did not have an Illinois driver's license, but produced a Mexican ID card. The officer detected the odor of alcohol on Benevides-Jimenez' breath, and he said he had had two drinks. Police observed in his vehicle a box containing seven empty cans of Modelo beer. Benavides-Jimenez showed signs of impairment on standard field sobriety tests. The Secretary of State's office provided information that he had never been issued a driver's license. He was also cited for improper lane usage and improper transportation of an alcoholic beverage. His court date is May 21 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.

Duo take cognac from liquor store

 The manager of a liquor store in the 8100 block of Milwaukee Avenue told police that on May 4 just before 10:20 p.m., a man and woman walked into the store together. The woman exited the store and then the man grabbled two full-sized bottles of Hennessy Cognac and started walking toward the exit. When the manager started to walk around the counter to stop the offender, the man said, "don't even move" and ran out and into a waiting vehicle, which contained the woman and someone sitting in the driver's seat. The vehicle drove off eastbound on Monroe Street from Oriole Avenue. It was described as a gray or silver SUV.
