Couple Nab $730 Apple iPad From Store, Police Say

A man and woman in their 30s shopping at a retail store in the 6100 block of Touhy Jan. 20 at about 8:20 p.m. went to the electronics section and expressed interest in a 64 GB white Apple iPad, selling for $729.99. They asked the clerk to put it by the register so they could do additional shopping in the store and then come back for it.

According to police, the woman came back to the electronics counter and, while the clerk was busy with other work, took the iPad and concealed it in her shopping cart. The man and woman then exited the store without paying for the iPad, police said.

The store discovered the iPad missing during a later merchandise count. Store security said the two offenders have been observed committing the same type of theft at three of the chain's other stores. Police are investigating.

Man charged with DUI; confusion over the hour

Ernesto Torres, 24, of Westchester was charged with DUI Jan. 22 just after 11:15 p.m. in the 7400 block of Dempster. Police said they observed him traveling 54 mph in a 35 mph zone and crossing over the striped traffic lane. 

Police stopped the vehicle and the officer observed the odor of alcohol on Torres' breath, according to the report. When asked if he had been drinking, he said he had not. He told police he got off work at 1 a.m. and was dropping off a friend in Glenview. This occurred at 11:47 p.m.; when the officer told him it wasn't 1 a.m. yet, he replied by saying he got off work at 12:30 a.m., according to the report. Police said he showed impairment on field sobriety tests. He was also cited for speeding and improper lane usage. His court date is Feb. 8.
