Death Investigation Yields Partly Decomposed Body

Building engineer had not seen a tenant in more than 30 days.

Police responded to a well-being check for Paul Fordonski, 70, on Oct. 28 at 10:50 a.m. at his apartment in the 9100 block of Terrace Drive, Niles. The building engineer said he had not seen Fordonski in more than 30 days.

Police officers said they smelled a foul odor that got stronger as they neared the apartment, and they entered through an open window. They said the home was in horrendous condition and poorly kept. They found Fordonski's body laying in a bathroom face down, with no signs of visible injury, and said the body was in a long-period timeframe of decomposition. An evidence technician processed the scene. When police contacted the victim's doctor, he said he had not seen the victim since August. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office was notified and they responded they would investigate. Police notified the victim's next of kin.

An employee of a bank in the 5600 block of Touhy, Niles, reported Friday at 12:13 p.m. that a woman presented the Texas driver's license and credit card of a 47-year-old Dallas, Texas woman who had had her purse stolen.

Police said the offender wanted to know the amount of money in the Texas woman's bank account. The bank employee flagged the account for fraudulent activity and told the offender the bank would have to verify her account. The bank retained the victim's credit card and driver's license, which police later placed into inventory. The offender fled the bank heading eastbound and was not found. Police are investigating.
