Driver Hits Five Cars, Charged With DUI

Eval Velazquez-Montesinos, 21, of North Ridge Avenue, Chicago, was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident Sunday, April 22 just after 2 a.m. Police said he struck five vehicles: a 2003 Toyota SUV, a 2001 Chevy van, a 2002 Dodge van, a 2003 Chevy SUV, a 1997 Dodge sedan and a 2005 Chrysler four-door, in the 9000 block of Churchill, Niles.

As police were arriving at the scene of the vehicle crash there, they saw a green vehicle with extensive front end damage leaving. They spoke to the driver, Velazquez-Montesinos, and detected the odor of alcohol on his breath, according to the police report. Velazquez-Montesinos told police he might have hit a pole, then said he might have hit a big garbage can, police said. An officer noticed fresh red paint transfer from one of the cars he struck on the driver's side of his vehicle. Police asked Velazquez if he had been drinking, and he said yes, before he started work at 6 p.m., police said. An officer found a bottle of Jack Daniels whisky, half-empty, in a bag on the passenger seat, the report said. He failed field sobriety tests, police said, and was cited for failure to wear a seatbelt and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. 

His court date is May 21 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.

Man charged with possession of cannabis

Marius Reut, 24, of Niles was charged with possession of cannabis on April 22 at about 11:50 p.m. after police observed two people in a vehicle parked in the 8200 block of Oleander. Police checked the driver's license and noticed the odor of cannabis in the car, they said. When they asked if their was anything illegal in the vehicle, Reut said there were approximately four baggies of cannabis with a total of about 12 grams, police said. A K9 officer arrived but the search did not reveal any more substances than what was originally discovered. Reut's court date is May 7.
