Fight Breaks Out At Niles Restaurant, Gang Signs Flashed, Police Say

Danny Machado, 23, and Edgar Chavez, 20, both of Niles, were charged with one count each of mob action after police saw a large group of people gathered in the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant in the 9000 block of Milwaukee Avenue at 4:10 a.m. Aug. 25

Police saw two men running westbound on Ballard Road, followed by another man, a 28-year-old witness from Hanover Park. 

The witness told police that the fleeing men started a fight inside the restaurant, and the officer went after one of them, described as Hispanic and wearing a blue and black striped shirt. The other one wore dark clothing. Descriptions of both men were broadcast on police radio, and police caught both men in the area of Prospect and Oak.   They were brought back to the scene for a show-up, and were identified as the men causing the fight in the restaurant parking lot, according to police.

A witness told police he had been in the restaurant eating with his wife and their friend the victim, the 28-year-old Hanover Park man, when Machado and Chavez began interacting with them, flashing gang signs and making comments about the Latin Kings, the report indicated.  An argument began, and the witness and his wife went outside, and Machado and Chavez followed them to the parking lot.

Additional unknown people got involved in the argument in the parking lot, and police said the argument escalated to a fight, the report said. Police arrived shortly after, prompting Machado and Chavez to flee. 

Another witness, a 35-year-old Park Ridge man, told police he was walking to the restaurant and saw a large crowd of people pushing and punching each ohter.

In the melee, the victim was hit in the head with a brick.  Paramedics took him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital with a cut to the back of his head. 

Their court date is Sept. 11 at the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.

Mom Forgets To Bring Son Food, Domestic Disturbance Breaks Out

Police responded to a home in the 7800 block of Nordica Aug. 23 about 2:30 p.m. for a report of a domestic incident. A woman in her 50s said her son, 19, had gotten into an argument after she did not get him any fast food when she went to Burger King, according to the report, and he started yelling at her. The son admitted to yelling. The argument was verbal only. The son agreed to leave and stay with a friend for the night. Police issued domestic violence forms.
