Friday Blotter: Arrests Follow 8 Retail Thefts in Spurt

One incident involved an attempt to conceal gaming systems in plastic storage bin.

Niles police were busy making arrests after eight retail theft incidents occurred within a four-day period over the past week.

Six people were taken into custody over retail thefts in the 8000 and 9000 blocks of Golf Road between July 22 and July 24, according to police reports.

There were also retail thefts reported in the 900 block of Civic Center Drive on July 22 and at Golf Mill Center shopping center on July 25.

Mayra Cuita, 34, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft for attempting to steal plumbing supplies from a business in the 900 block of Civic Center Drive on July 22, police reported. Cuita was released on bond pending her court date.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested for retail theft after he was observed by security personnel at a store in the 9000 block of Golf Road concealed DVDs, T-shirts, shorts and snacks valued at $96.44 into his backpack. The juvenile was apprehended when he attempted to leave the store July 22, according to a police report.

Vanessa J. Aguilar, 18, of Chicago, and unidentified individual in the police report were charged with retail theft July 22, according to a police report. They were observed by security personnel at a store in the 8500 block of Golf Road putting numerous baby clothing items, valued at $292.95, inside a black bag. Both offenders were released on bonds pending their court dates.

Robert L. Dozie, 20, of Des Plaines, was charged with retail theft July 24 after a security agent at a store in the 9000 block of Golf Road observed him put a bottle of liquor, valued at $15.99, and a bag of chips into his backpack and attempted to leave the store, according to a police report. Dozie was released on bond pending his court date.

Hasan M. Awwad, 27, and Timothy V. Fish, 25, both of Des Plaines, were charged with retail theft July 24. Police reported that a loss prevention agent at a store in the 8600 block of Dempster Street observed one offender place two faucet stems and three valves into the other offender’s pants pockets and attempt to leave the store. Both men were released on bonds pending their court dates.

Demica D. Porter, 21, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft July 25 after a security agent at the Golf Mill Center reported she was observed placing a video gaming system and two portable gaming systems, valued at more than $484, into a plastic storage bin in her cart, and exiting the store, according to a police report.
