Guilty Plea: Former Niles Police Employee

Gary Amato, a former civilian employee of the Niles Police Department, pleaded guilty Monday to fabricating an armed robbery in 2011, while he attempted to steal village funds.

It's a guilty plea from Gary Amato, the former Niles Police Department civilian employee, for concocting a story  in the summer of 2011, according to a press release from the Niles Police Department.   

The plea was made Monday at the Cook Country 2nd District Courthouse in Skokie.

Amato admitted later he  for the police department.

Amato suffered a stab wound during the so-called incident; officials never did go on record to state the wound was self-inficted.

By pleading guilty, Amato copped to one count of Felony Theft and one count of Felony-Official Misconduct, the release said. 

According to the release, Amato was sentenced to pay $5,037.93 of restitution, serve two years of probation and 100 hours of community service. 

A statement about Police Chief Dean Strzelecki's reaction was included in the release. "The arrest and conviction of former civilian employee Gary Amato, once again reinforces, that he will not tolerate any misconduct committed by any member of the Niles Police Department."
