Knife-Wielding Woman Charged With Battery

A male victim, whom she said had struck her on the face, had some small cuts on him. An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

Amparo Herrera, 34, of Niles was charged with domestic battery July 9 at 7 a.m. at her apartment building in the 8200 block of Elizabeth, Niles. Police said a 31-year-old Niles man told them he had had an argument with Herrera and that she had threatened him with a knife. The man had a scratch on the left side of his neck and a small red mark on his stomach, where he said Herrera stabbed him, but the skin was not broken, according to police. They photographed the marks.

Police found Herrera in her apartment, and said she had a steak knife in the waistband of her skirt.

Police took Herrera into custody and secured a Spanish speaking officer to translate. Herrera stated, through the interpreter, that she rented the victim a place to stay in her apartment and they developed a relationship during the three months he had been living there, police said. Herrera described the victim as jealous and said he had struck her in the past during arguments. Before the knife incident, the two had been drinking and an argument began. After arguing for awhile, they both fell asleep. Some time later, Herrera awoke and got dressed to leave the apartment, according to police.

The victim woke up and asked her where she was going, and why she was dressed the way she was, police said. The two began to argue again and Herrera said the victim struck her on the left side of her face, police said. Police said they did not observe any injury or mark on Herrera's face. According to police, Herrera said she picked up the knife and put it up against the victim's neck, telling him that he was not going to hurt her again and to leave the apartment or call the police. Herrera said she does not remember putting the knife to the victim's stomach. An assistant state's attorney denied felony charges for Herrera. Her court date is pending.
