Man Bites Security Officer in Shoplifting Attempt

Suspect confronted after he was seen on surveillance monitor concealing an expensive item down pants.

Jose Velazquez, 30, of South Elizabeth Street in Chicago, was charged with battery after he scuffled with a security agent at a home improvement store in the 900 block of Civic Center Drive in  Niles on April 29. 

A security agent watched on a surveillance camera as Velazquez placed a $396 Bosch Laser level down the front of his pants and then exited the store without paying. When the agent tried to stop him, Velazquez resisted and bit the employee on the arm, drawing blood, according to the police report.

The security officer was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for medical treatment, police reported.

Velazquez was also charged with retail theft. His court date was May 3.

Charles A. Gurber, 24, of Skokie, was charged with driving under the influence after police observed him driving erratically in the 8900 block of Milwaukee Avenue on April 30. When they stopped him, Gurber almost backed up into the squad car. When police activated the air horn, he stopped backing up. He showed impairment during field sobriety tests. His court date is May 17 at the county courthouse in Skokie.
