Man Distracts Woman In Coffee Aisle, Grabs Her Wallet, Police Say

He asked her questions about tea; later, she found her wallet and checkbook missing. An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.


A 66-year-old woman was shopping in the coffee and tea aisle of a grocery store in the 5600 block of Touhy when a man in his 40s began asking her questions about tea. A short time later, she discovered the zipper on her purse was open and her wallet, checkbook and another cardholder were missing from it, according to the police report. She had the purse on her shoulder while she was talking to him and the whole time she was in the store, police said. The store is saving video surveillance.

Man charged with DUI after stopping on street

Zenon Milewski, 53, of Des Plaines, was charged with DUI Jan. 11 just before 3:25 a.m., when he stopped behind a squad car, which was on another call in the 7300 block of Harlem Avenue and had its emergency lights flashing, even though he could have just driven past it, according to the report. When an officer approached Milewski's car and asked him to roll down the window, he had trouble doing so, police said, and they noticed the odor of alcohol on his breath. He did not offer a coherent explanation for why he had just come to a stop. police said, and showed impairment on field sobriety tests. His court date is March 7 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.
