Man Drives Through Garage Door After Allegedly Striking Another Car

Police found him slumped over steering wheel. Arrest information is supplied by the Niles Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Emmanuel Rosas, 24, of Niles was charged early Sunday with DUI and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. Police responded at about 4:30 a.m. to a motor vehicle accident in the 6700 block of Touhy Avenue, Niles. The owner of a white 2011 Volkswagen found that someone had struck the vehicle, and police determined that someone had tried to squeeze into a parking space on the street and struck the Volkswagen.

A witness had copied down the license plate number of the vehicle that struck the Volkswagen and fled the scene, and police used the license plate number to find Rosas, the alleged driver of the fleeing vehicle.

They found Rosas' car in the driveway of his Niles home, and said there was white paint transfer from the Volkswagen on his vehicle.

When police finally got him to open the garage door, they said they smelled alcohol on his breath. When they asked him if he had been at the restaurant, he first said "yes" and then "no," police reported. When asked if he had consumed alcohol, police said he replied "yes." He showed impairment on field sobriety tests.

Woman reports purse stolen, but cops don't see a purse on video

A 60-year-old Wilmette woman reported that while shopping at a store in the 5600 block of Touhy, Niles, on Dec. 10 around 3 p.m., she took a shopping cart and placed her purse in it, then left the cart unattended for a few minutes. When she returned, she told police, the purse was gone.

Police and security reviewed surveillance tapes, and said they showed the victim entering the store without a purse and not taking a cart, but instead going to speak with a store associate. Police let the woman watch the tape, but she was still adamant someone had stolen the purse, police said. Police helped her search her vehicle but did not find the purse. They filed a report and advised her to cancel credit cards.
