Man Has Drug Overdose, Police Say; Drug Paraphernalia Recovered

An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

Police responded to the 9200 block of Courtland for a drug overdose case on July 28 just after 5 p.m. and found a 43-year-old man conscious and talking. Police spoke to the person who had called in to report the overdose, a woman in her 50s, who said the victim had gone out with friends, then came home and went into the bathroom. Soon after, she said she tried to get him to open the door, but when there was no response, she got worried and unlocked the door, police said.

She found him with his face in the toilet and an unknown white substance coming from his mouth, according to the report. When he started to shake, she called 911, and Niles Fire Department paramedics took him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

The woman found a uncapped needle, a spoon, and two silver wrappers in the bathroom.  She consented to a search of the victim's room, police said, and signed a consent form. Police found old methadone bottles, two glass pipes which smelled of burnt cannabis, a metal round box used for cutting cannabis, two needles and a scale, according to the report. The victim said he shot up vicodin after being pressured by his friends, and that he was sorry for his actions.

Irate customer asked to leave off-track betting facility

Niles police arrived at the Off Track Betting facility in the 9200 block of Greenwood July 26 at about 4:10 p.m., and an employee told them a customer was being loud and upset over a lotto ticket, and they just wanted him to leave, according to the report.

Police spoke to the 84-year-old customer, from Kenosha, Wisc., and he said he was upset because the business told him he had won $100 with the lotto ticket, and he believed he had won $1,000. He also wanted the ticket checked, not cashed in, the report indicated. The customer repeated numerous times that he had a heart condition and shouldn't be getting all worked up; police asked each time if he wanted to go to the hospital, but he declined. The customer also said he was upset because he didn't like the way the manager was looking at him and the fact he was being asked to leave. He did leave the business, police said.

No alcoholic beverages were involved in the incident, police said; however, they forwarded a copy of the report to the liquor commission.
