Man Loses $5,000 To Scammer Posing As An IRS Agent

An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

The following information is taken from Niles Police reports.

A 61-year-old man who lives in the 7100 block of Niles Avenue reported to police that on Nov. 5 around noon, he received a phone call from a man who identified himself as working for the Internal Revenue Service, according to the police report. The caller said the victim owed $4,970 in back taxes and needed to pay the same day. Following the caller's instructions, the man went to a store and bought Green Dot money packs in that amount, and phoned the caller back with the cards' verification codes, which transferred the money.

About two hours later the victim received another phone call from the same number, with a man saying the victim owed another $2,000 in taxes, and if he didn't pay, he would be arrested, his immigration card would be canceled, and he would be deported, the police report indicated.
