Man Uses His Daughter To Steal From Store, Police Say

Rameshbhai D. Patel, 52, of Des Plaines was charged with retail theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor Sept. 14 after an incident at a retail hardware store in Civic Center Plaza. The security guard told police he had received reports from employees in recent weeks of a man retrieving receipts from a trash can outside the store and then walking into the store with the receipts. The security agent said on Sept. 14, he observed Patel on surveillance video selecting a Rheem household air filter, then handing it, along with a paper receipt, to a girl, who police later identified as his 13-year-old daughter. The security agent said he saw Patel and the girl exit the store without paying for the item, with a value of $4.97, according to the police report. The security agent stopped them, and the girl said her father had handed her the item and the receipt and instructed her to walk out of the store with both, the report indicated. The receipt was from May 27. Police charged Patel and released the daughter to her mother. The officer also contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, and a case worker said a report would be made. Patel's court date is Oct. 9 at the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.

Carmel Epstein, 26, of Northbrook was charged with DUI and driving without a valid driver's license Sept. 13 at 2:25 a.m. After police stopped him for driving 50 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 9000 block of Milwaukee Avenue, the officer observed the odor of alcohol on his breath, according to the report. When asked for his insurance, he said he was driving on a ticket, and tried to find it in the back seat. He produced his bond paperwork, rather than the actual ticket. When police asked if he had had anything to drink, he replied "two beers," the report indicated. He showed impairment on field sobriety tests. His court date is Oct. 31.
