Man Placed Skimmer In Bank's ATM, Police Charge

Police charged them after getting a tip from a financial institution. A skimming device records consumers' info. An arrest is merely an accusation and does not indicate a conviction.

Bogdan Serghite, 26, was charged with identity theft, a Class 3 felony, and Catalin Pencic, 36, was charged with knowingly damaging property after a May 8 incident at and near a financial institution in the 8200 block of Golf Road. Both men live at the same address in the 2500 block of West Estes Street, Chicago.

The fraud division of the financial institution tipped off Niles police that a skimming device had been installed on an ATM machine, and conducted surveillance. Two men walked near the area, Serghite entered the bank and the financial institution team alerted police the skimming device was being removed, according to police. Police took Serghite into custody; Pencic ran, but police found him and took him into custody, police said.

Police took both men to the police station, and said Pencic deliberately banged his head into an access card reader at the station, damaging it and causing it to partially dislodge from the wall.

Serghite's court date was May 9, and Pencic's court date is June 8, both at the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.
