"National Night Out" Fun, Learning Take Place Tuesday

Compete in a donut-eating contest, dunk a cop, pick up some safety tips and have a bite to eat.

While the purpose of the National Night Out is for neighbors and families to take a stand against crime, drugs and violence, the real reason people go is that it's fun.

The Niles Police Department is organizing the event Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 6 to about 10 p.m. at Washington Park, at Ballard and Washington (just northeast of Dempster St. and Milwaukee Ave.), Niles.

Kids can visit booths set up by community organizations, play games and pick up lots of free toys and goodies. Last year's event featured a donut-eating contest for kids.

A flashlight walk will start at 9:30 p.m., and you may want to bring insect repellent.

Police will also do safety demonstrations, telling kids how to try to thwart someone who's trying to abduct them, for example.

Other activities include a “distracted driver” road simulation, “drunk driving” simulation, K-9 demonstrations, crime prevention and home security booths, food, games and raffles.

Last but not least, if attendees have a good pitching arm, they can send a cop falling into the dunk tank.
