Neighbor Finds Niles Man Collapsed While Mowing Lawn

The neighbor, a nurse, rushed over but could not find a pulse and dialed 911.

Niles police responded to a home in the 7700 block of Nora Oct. 26, just before 1:30 p.m., when a woman said she had seen looking out her home's window and seen her neighbor, an older man at the Nora address, mowing the lawn in his backyard, according to Niles Police Department reports.

A couple of minutes later, she saw him again, sitting in a chair and not looking well, and with the lawn mower still running, according to the report. The woman, a registered nurse, rushed over to check on the man, but could not find a pulse and dialed 911, police said. Niles Fire Department paramedics took the man, Matthew Potoczek, 88, to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police contacted his family members.
