Neighbor Witnessed Aftermath of Tuesday Stabbing

He saw blood in the victim's car and on the street.

Roger Plummer saw paramedics remove an injured Village of Niles employee from his car, put him on a stretcher and place him into an ambulance Tuesday morning.

Plummer lives at the intersection of Davis Street and Grace Avenue, Niles, where pepper sprayed and threatened with a gun during an armed robbery that happened about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The employee had been on a routine round of collecting cash from Village of Niles offices and locations, and was en route to a bank to deposit the money. The robbers fled with the deposit bags of cash.

Neither Plummer nor his son, who were both home at the time the incident unfolded, heard anything unusual.  Plummer said he had been in the shower at the time, but asked his son if he had heard any shouting or shots, and his son replied he had not.

Their first inkling something had happened came when they saw large numbers of police and firefighters arriving on Davis Street near their home.

"I said, 'oh my gosh, something bad must have happened,'" Plummer recalled.

He saw blood in the employee's Village of Niles vehicle and blood on the street. The blood remained on the street, visible on the snow through a layer of street salt, into the afternoon.

"I could hear the police talking to him (the victim) and it sounded like he was speaking back to them, but it was hard to hear because there were a lot of voices," Plummer said.

Police put up yellow police tape in the area, but the winter wind had loosed it by afternoon.
