Niles Crime: DUI, Locker Pried Open And $250 Stolen

An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

A 67-year-old Evanston man told police that on June 30, between 7 and 7:20 p.m., someone pried open his lock in the men's locker room of a fitness center in the 6300 block of Touhy Avenue. His wallet and watch were taken, according to the report.

The man's wallet contained $250, credit cards, and his Illinois driver's license and ID card, the report indicated.

Police said the locker room has three possible entrances/exits, and not all have security cameras. At the time of the report, YMCA management planned to review video and contact police if they find anything suspicious.

Just after 3 a.m., a Niles police officer observed a car eastbound on Touhy Avenue speeding, passing into oncoming traffic lanes in order to drive around slower cars and blowing through a red light, according to the report.

When the officer stopped the car, Morris told them he had just come from a Chicago nightclub and was sorry for driving so fast but he was in a hurry to go to Jewel-Osco to buy some ginger ale, the report said. Police smelled the odor of alcohol on his breath, and he admitted to drinking two Belvedere vodka-cranberry drinks at the nightclub. He showed sign of impairment during field sobriety tests, police said.

His court date is Aug. 2 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts. He was also cited for disregarding a traffic light and improper lane usage.
