Niles Crime: Speeding 20MPH Over Limit, Electronics Stolen

Also, a purse snatched and car break-in. An arrest is not an indication of guilt.

55 in 35 mph zone

On July 16 at 3:15 p.m. a Niles police officer saw a car driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 7900 block of Dempster Street. The Officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the corner of Dempster Street and Oleander Avenue. The driver was identified as Julio Estrada, 31, of Chicago. The officer learned that he was driving on a suspended drivers license, according to the police report. He was charged with driving on a suspended license and cited for speeding.

On July 16 at 5:30 p.m. Niles police saw a traffic crash that had just occurred in the 6900 block of Milwaukee Avenue. The officer conducted the accident investigation and learned that the driver of one of the vehicles, Diane E. Janik, 38, of Chicago, had a suspended license and registration as well as had an active warrant for failure to appear. She was charged with driving with a suspended license and driving with suspended registration, and also cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and following to closely.

Martin Cruz, 21, of Chicago, was involved in a motor vehicle crash on July 17 at 9:15 a.m. Cruz told police he has never been issued an Illinois driver's license, according to the police report. He was arrested for operating a motor vehicle without a license and issued citations for failure to yield while turning left and for having no valid license.

Retail theft

On July 17 at about 3:45 p.m. a loss prevention agent for a store in the 5600 block of Touhy told police they saw Alexander Korzunov, 21, of Evanston, selecting merchandise from the display shelf. The loss prevention agent saw him conceal the merchandise in his lap top bag that he was carrying with him and leave the store, according to the police report, and then stopped him. Korzunov was charged with retail theft.

Credit card fraud

On July 16 a 54-year-old man from Niles came to the police station to report that he was contacted by his bank and advised that a unknown subject applied for and received a credit card in his name. The incident occurred out of state and the bank stated that it could not tell him what state this actually occurred in due to company policy. The man told police that he did not apply for any such card himself.

Vehicle burglarized

A 23-year-old man from Niles reported a burglary to an Impala that belongs to his brother, however the man is the primary driver and the possessions stolen belonged to him. He said he was unsure if the doors were locked. The thief took a Play Station console and four controllers, a small stereo speaker, DVD movies and five Play Station and X-Box games, as well as the face plate from the stereo.

Theft

A 44-year-old woman from Park Ridge told police that on July 16 at about 5:20 p.m. her purse was stolen from a shopping cart in a store on the 5600 block of Touhy. 

Retail theft

On July 17 at about 10:45 a.m. a loss prevention agent at a store in the 9500 block of Greenwood stated that she observed an unknown offender, who was described as male with a thin build, 6'03", wearing sunglasses, a black shirt, brown cargo shorts, and a white hat worn backwards, enter the store and walk towards the video game console display shelf. She then observed the offender take a game console box and walk towards the exit the doors without paying for the item. The LPA advised that she approached the offender and asked to see his receipt at which time he walked past her and left the store, then swore and said, "you guys owe me for my TV." He entered a black Ford Mustang and fled. Park Ridge police went to the registered owner’s residence and learned that the owners brother had the vehicle. Attempts to locate the offender were not successful.
