Niles Man Dies While Cleaning Pool

Several neighbors ran to his aid.

An 81-year-old Niles man died suddenly Friday, the Niles Police Department reported Saturday.

The Niles Police and Fire Departments responded to a call from a home in the 8500 block of Betty Terrace for a man who had been found in the home's swimming pool.

The man, Michelangelo Volpe, 81, had gone outside to clean the swimming pool, police said. About 20 minutes later, a neighbor saw his wife trying to pull him out of the pool, according to police. Several neighbors went to help her remove him from the pool, and someone called 911.

The Niles Fire Department took Mr. Volpe to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where emergency room doctors pronounced him dead at 6:45 p.m. Police said there is no indication of anything suspicious in nature, and they are investigating what happened.
