Niles Man Punches Girlfriend, Tries To Prevent 911 Call, Police Said

David Kiely, 46, of Niles was charged with domestic battery and interference with reporting domestic violence on Aug. 29 after police responded to a 32-year-old woman who said Kiely was her boyfriend and related the following events. He had come home that day, fallen asleep on the couch, and swore at her when she woke him to ask for grocery money, police said. She went into another room to work on her computer, and a short time later he entered the room and started to argue with her, then punched her two times on the left thigh, according to the report. She picked up a phone to call 911 but he took it from her and threw it, then said, "I dare you to lock me up. You will regret it," the report indicated.

He left the room, returned, saw the woman trying to call 911 and again grabbed and threw the phone, and grabbed at the woman and placed his hand around her neck, police said, and as she pulled away, he scratched her neck. Then, as he was leaving the residence, he said, "I dare you to lock me up and I'll bury you," according to the report. 

Police observed a scratch on the woman's neck, but she declined medical attention. She later clarified that he didn't squeeze her neck or try to block her airway as he grabbed her neck, the report said.

Police spoke to Kiely, who denied striking the woman or putting his hand on her, according to the report. He said the argument started when he refused to give her money for alcohol, the report indicated, and said he left the apartment to avoid a fight. His court date is Sept. 18 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.
