OMG PD: Odd Crimes in Our Patch Region

This week: an apologetic burglar, a flower vandal and crank calls from Anthony Hopkins.

Local police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt.

Two business owners came into the Skokie police station to report more than 100 harassing phone calls they had received from a man allegedly named Anthony Hopkins.

A store employee told Niles police that a man in his 20s took 39 boxes of allergy medication and left without paying.

A Skokie man came home after he did some shopping and saw two strangers rummaging through his belongings. When the burglars saw the homeowner, one of them immediately apologized. “I’m sorry I’m in your home,” the culprit said, according to police. The homeowner had less friendly things to say and the culprits fled.

An Elmhurst man allegedly rode a Metra train from Melrose Park to River Forest without paying. When spotted, he tried to run away but was stopped by two Metra officials.

The man allegedly pushed the pair to the ground, spat on them and ran away. He was later spotted by a gas station employee and arrested.

Instead of a tip, he left a clue

A cab driver reported that a passenger left his taxi in Winnetka without paying. The passenger also left his wallet in the cab. Police located him and he paid the driver $60. The wallet was returned to its owner.

A Glenview man reported that he agreed to purchase a boat online, but after the money was transferred the boat was not delivered. The reported loss is $20,400.

Police were dispatched to a Skokie park where a roll of toilet paper was set afire and left inside a portable bathroom. The damage is estimated at $2,000. two weeks in a row earlier this summer.

Someone pulled nearly 10 flowers out of a flowerbed in Northbrook.

A Chicago woman was charged with retail theft after Macy’s store security at Old Orchard Mall in Skokie allegedly caught her taking children clothing and wine and hiding the items in her baby’s stroller.
