Perfume Thief Runs Through Gambling Establishment, Police Say

Also, a quick-change scam artist deceives a restaurant out of $100. An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

William H. Burton, 60, of Chicago, was charged with felony retail theft the afternoon of April 25 after police said security agents at a Golf Mill Shopping Center store observed him concealing two boxes of cologne under his jacket. He left the store without paying and a security agent tried to stop him, but he swung a fist at the security agent's face, trying to strike, but missed.

He ran out of the mall's exit doors on the Greenwood Avenue side, pursued by the security agents, and dropped his jacket and the cologne in the parking lot while running. He ran into the front doors of the off-track betting facility located in a mall outlot, and then ran out the back doors near the kitchen. A security agent grabbed him but he struggled free and took off running southbound, then gave up from exhaustion before he reached Church Street. When police arrived, he complained of shortness of breath and chest pain and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was treated and released, then taken to the police station for booking. Assistant State's Attorney Emily Leuin approved felony charges. His court date is June 8 in the Skokie branch of the Cook county courts. The security agent whom Burton swung at declined medical attention and did not want to sign battery complaints.
