Police Honor Fallen Heroes At Ceremony

Event was part of National Police Week, and it has special meaning for Niles police.

Across the country, police departments honor officers killed in the line of duty at ceremonies on May 15, during National Police Week.

In Niles, an honor guard lowered the flag at an 8 a.m. ceremony Tuesday at the Niles Memorial Waterfall at Touhy and Milwaukee Avenues, across from the Niles police station.

Niles Police Chief Dean Strzelecki made remarks. The ceremony is personal for the Niles Police Department, which lost one of its officers, several years ago in an on-duty vehicle crash.

So far this year, 37 law enforcement officers have been killed in the U.S., according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
