Police: Look For NATO Graffiti, Oddities

These graffiti (pictured) indicate unlawful activity could be in the works. Also, be on the lookout for vacant homes suddenly occupied, liquid-filled bottles, anything unusual.

Niles Police Chief Dean Strzelecki says he often hears people say, "you know, I saw something odd, but I didn't want to bother the police with it--I know you guys are busy."

Strzelecki has two words for these considerate people: "Bother me."

Especially this weekend, with the NATO Summit taking place in Chicago and demonstrators expected, Strzelecki is asking the public to be eyes and ears for the police department.

The .pdf attached to this article shows types of graffiti that could be linked to someone trying to incite unlawful activity, and Strzelecki asks you to call 911 and report it if you see it in the area.

Walkers and joggers going through neighborhoods might notice something unusual, he said. And business owners might have a sense if something is amiss.

Suburban police departments will have extra staff on hand this weekend in case anyone needs help.

"There's no intelligence that says anything is coming out this way, but we want to be prepared just in case," Strzelecki said.
