Police: Man's Detective Work Scuttles Sale of Stolen Car

Also a death investigation and telephone harassment. The information is from the Niles Police Department. An arrest does not indicate guilt.

Suspected stolen car

An 18-year-old man from Mundelein was with a 23-year-old from Mundelein and called Niles police to say he was at the Currency Exchange in the 8000 block of Waukegan and was attempting to purchase an Acura that he believed to be stolen. According to the police report, he had seen an ad for the car on Craigslist and agreed to meet the car’s driver, a 21-year-old woman from Chicago, in Niles to buy it. But as he was following her to the Currency Exchange to complete the sale, he researched the car through Carfax and learned from a dealership in Elmhurst that it had been stolen. An officer located the Acura and performed a traffic stop in the 7900 block of Waukegan. The officer spoke to auto dealer employee and he stated that the car was purchased from them by the driver with a fraudulent check, and they had a case pending with Elmhurst police. Elmhurst police said they would follow up on the case and the woman was release from Niles police custody without arrest.

Police were dispatched to the 6900 block of Oakton for a death investigation on July 13 for a 79-year-old man. The Officer arrived on scene and spoke to the caller who said she last checked in on the victim the evening before in his bedroom. She then checked in on him at around 4:30 a.m. and found him not breathing and cold to the touch. The victim was pronounced by a doctor. He had suffered from numerous medical conditions and was bed ridden. According to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office’s the man died of natural causes.

On July 12 a 28-year-old woman came to the police station to file a threats by electronic device report. The woman said that her boyfriend, a 28-year-old man from Niles was sending her text messages threatening in nature. The messages stated "...bring me the keys or you going to regret it and you will pay for it...," according to the police report. T

A resident on the 9300 block of Delphia reported on July 13 that graffiti appeared on her wooden fence overnight

Domestic Dispute

On July 13 at about 4 p.m. Niles police responded to a domestic dispute between a 66-year old woman and her 72-year-old husband. The woman told police she did not want her husband to drive their car because she believes he suffers from dementia and thinks he will hurt someone. She told police her husband had brandished his cane in her direction. The officer asked the husband several questions and said he appeared alert and oriented as to his identity, place of residence, and time/date. The man stated that his wife argue constantly, but he refused offers of Niles Family Services.

As officers were leaving, the wife told them her husband has a firearm in the house, and retrieved it. The officer verified that the husband has a valid FOID card, expiration in 2022. The man stated that he had never threatened nor brandished any firearm at his wife and she did not dispute that statement.

Telephone Harassment

A 21-year-old man from Park Ridge told police on July 15 that he received three phone calls since 2 a.m. that morning from the a California area code. He didn’t answer the first two, but answered the third. He stated that an unknown male, whom he described as sounding young, began accusing him of sleeping with his girlfriend. The victim stated that the male threatened him physically and then began to cite personal information about him, including home address and information about his parents. The caller told the man to meet him at a store in the 7100 block of Milwaukee, so that he could beat him up. The man does not believe the phone call to be a prank by any of his friends or associates, and has not had any recent troubles with any individuals. Attempts to call the number back are met with a recording that says the call cannot be completed.
