Police Ticket Handicapped Parking Space Violators

State police wrote tickets in Niles Saturday.

With cars crowding mall parking lots and snow a possibiity, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is cracking down on drivers who illegally park in parking spaces designated for the handicapped, according to his office.

Illinois State Police have been ticketing violators since Black Friday, and they came to Niles Saturday to ensure handicapped parking spaces at were free for those who need them, according to ABC7.


“Our mission is not to give tickets, but to ensure the parking spaces are available to those who need them,” White said in a statement. “My message today is simple-if you don’t belong there-don’t park there.”

The fine for illegally using a placard or disability license plates without the authorized holder of those present is a maximum of $500, according to White's office. In addition, violators can be subject to a 30-day administrative driver’s license suspension from the Secretary of State for the first offense.


The fine for parking in an accessible parking space without a parking placard or disability license plates can be as much $350.

White is asking his Safe Driver Advisory Council to raise penalties to as much as $2,500 for people who use a deceased person's placard.
