Police Warn Of Increased Burglaries, Advise Being Wary

One woman stepped out of the shower and saw a burglar in her home.

Park Ridge police have issued an alert to residents to watch out for suspicious people and activity after a rash of residential burglaries on the east end of town, immediately bordering Niles and Chicago.

"We're getting a higher number of burglaries than what we would normally see at this time of year," said Commander Lou Jogmen.

In some instances, the burglars have entered homes through an unlocked door or window.

"In one case, one gal was in the shower, and when the burglar confronted her, he ran," Jogmen said.

In another case about six months ago, someone kicked down a front door to break in, frightening the female resident, who was walking down the stairs at the time.

The rash of burglaries has the same modus operandi, Jogmen said. The offender heads for the bedrooms, grabs jewelry, watches and cash and is out the door within two to three minutes.

The burglaries have occurred from Greenwood east to the Niles-Park Ridge border at Oriole, and from Oakton Street (which also borders Niles) south to Touhy, he said.

Sgt. Robert Tornabene of the Niles Police Department said Niles police have not seen an uptick in the number of burglaries.
