Smoke Comes Out of Mailbox On Street Corner
On June 20 just after 3:20 p.m., a Niles woman flagged down a passing Morton Grove police officer to report smoke coming out of a mailbox at the corner of Foster and Washington Street, according to the report. Niles police and firefighters also responded, and cleared the scene.
The Morton Grove Officer explained he had seen what appeared to be a fire cracker or a smoke bomb lodged in the door of the mail box, and it subsequently fell inside. Niles police arranged for a mail carrier to open the box, and found an M-100 smoke cracker inside. None of the letters were damaged, police said.
