Stealing From ATM Users Possibly Attempted

Bank's alarm went off.

Police received a call from the alarm company of a bank in the 8500 block of Dempster, Niles, that an ATM machine may have been tampered with on Feb. 28. Police arrived to find the driver of a red pickup truck using the ATM. Police spoke to the driver, and checked to see he had a valid bank card with the bank. The bank notified police it was going to send someone out to look at the ATM machine to see if anyone had tampered with it. 

Man charged with DUI after crash

Mathew Valdes, 28, of Glenview was charged with DUI/alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident Feb. 28. Police had received a radio alert that a maroon vehicle had been involved in a hit and run crash in the 9000 block of Greenwood, Niles, and a Niles officer spotted the car stopped on Parkside Street, Niles, with front end damage and the radiator smoking. The driver smelled of alcohol, and told police he had had three or four shots. He showed impairment on field sobriety tests. He was additionally charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and no valid insurance. His court date is March 28 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.
