Tuesday Blotter: Identity Theft, Vandalism at Baseball Dugout and Contractor Charged with Battery

One independent contractor punched another independent contractor in the face.

Dispute

Police responded to a report of dispute on the 8000 block of Milwaukee Ave. July 27, according to a police report. The victim, a 22-year-old female from Niles, told police she became involved in verbal disputes over text messages with the offender, a 34-year-old female from Niles. It escalated to a pushing match and both received scratches. Both parties declined medical attention, and the victim did not wish to sign complaints.

Identity theft

A 23-year-old male from Niles reported identity theft to police July 27, according to a police report. The victim told police he noticed three suspicious charges on his bank debit card for various locations outside Illinois, totaling more than $890. The victim contacted his bank and was given the locations and businesses in which the charges were made, and requested a follow-up from police.

Police were dispatched to the 8500 block of Milwaukee Ave. for a death investigation July 27, according to a police report. A friend of the victim told police she visited the victim daily, and had a key to the residence. When she came over on this date the door was chain-locked.

The Niles Fire Department responded with the Niles Police Department and the chain was cut. The victim was discovered in an unresponsive, lifeless state. The Medical Examiner’s office was contacted and released the body of the deceased to the family. There were no signs of trauma on the victim.

Criminal damage to vehicle

Police responded to a report of vandalism on the 5600 block of Touhy Ave. July 27, according to a police report. The victim, a 42-year-old female from Evanston reported that unknown offenders scratched the driver’s side door on her 2005 Volvo, possibly with a key. The damaged appeared intentional, and the repair cost was unknown.

Criminal damage to property

Police were dispatched to the 7100 block of Harlem Ave. for a vandalism report at a public park July 27, according to a police report. A Park District employee told police unknown offenders wrote several words and phrases on a baseball dugout with white paint.

Battery

Police responded to a report of battery at the 8600 block of Osceola Ave. July 28, according to a police report. The offender, Lukasz G. Caban, 28, of Chicago, and the victim, a 35-year-old male from Niles, were both independent contractors working inside the residence, according to the report.

The offender had been painting an upstairs bathroom when the victim asked to do some electrical work on the light switch, according to the report. The offender said, “No!” and an argument occurred. The offender told police the victim shoved him, which the victim denied. The offender then punched the victim in the mouth with a closed fist.

When police arrived both Caban and the victim were standing outside the residence, and the victim had blood running down his chin and a broken front tooth. Caban was charged with battery, and was released on bond pending his court date.
