Woman Arrested in Cell Phone Resell Attempt

Police stake out site where theft suspect sought $80 from owner for device's return.

Shaquana L. Martin, 20, of Harvey, was charged with theft after a 44-year-old woman told police that she left her cell phone at the checkout counter of a Niles retail store in the 9000 block of Golf Road on June 3. The owner called the phone several times to try to locate it, and made contact with Martin, who said she would sell back the phone for $80.

The two women met at a gasoline station on Golf Road in Des Plaines and were observed by police, who stepped in to talk to Martin and recovered the cell phone. Martin’s court date is June 23 in the Cook County courthouse in Skokie.

Drug paraphernalia possession charge

Arthuro Miranda, 20, of Niles was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia about 9 a.m. June 5 after Niles police stopped his vehicle for traveling 52 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The officer reported detecting a faint odor of cannabis and contacted a K-9 unit. The canine, Odin, indicated marijuana was present. When police searched Miranda, a glass pipe--of the type frequently used for smoking marijuana--fell out of his pant leg. His court date is July 5 in Skokie.
