Woman Breaks Window To Escape Man's Attack

She was visibly shaking and having a panic attack when police responded. An arrest is merely an accusation and not evidence of a conviction.

When Niles police responded to a domestic incident Thursday just after 4 p.m., they found a 44-year-old woman who was visibly shaking and appeared to be suffering from a panic attack. Niles Fire Department paramedics were already at the scene treating her. Officers interviewed the victim's 12-year-old son, who said he was visiting a friend in the 8000 block of Washington Street when his mother arrived there, holding her arm and crying, police said.

The woman told police she would have a panic attack if she related the series of events, but then managed to tell them that she and her husband, 43, were at their home in the 8100 block of Monroe when he grabbed her by the neck and arm and said that if she called the police, he would kill her, according to the report.

Police said she used her right elbox to smash one of the windows in the house, then managed to get outside and run to her son's friend's house on Washington.

While police were present, the woman's phone began to ring, and the caller ID showed the husband was phoning. A Niles Police officer answered and identified himself as a police officer, and the husband said he had the wrong number and hung up, according to the report. The officer called him back, to no avail.

Police photographed redness marks on the woman's neck and visible bruises on her left arm, as well as her bandaged right elbow, they said, and she was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. She told police her husband likely took her SUV, but that she didn't know where he would go. Police checked the house, but did not find the offender, the report said. They gave the woman a domestic violence form and are investigating.
