24 Extra Trains To Run Through Morton Grove For Two Weeks Or More

Because a train bridge in Glenview is being repaired, extra trains are being routed through Morton Grove.

A railroad bridge which collapsed on Shermer Road on the Glenview-Northbrook border in May killed a husband and wife and is having long-lasting ramifications--including for the next few weeks in Morton Grove, Skokie and Niles.

Anyone who drives down Dempster Street, Howard Street or Touhy Avenue in Niles and Skokie will be affected by the extra 24 trains a day being routed down the Metra Milwaukee North Line tracks. The trains are being re-routed here so that the work on the Shermer Road rail bridge can take place.

Earlier: New Shermer Road bridge going in

Union Pacific Railroad was set to work around the clock Nov. 2 through 4 to install a replacement bridge over Shermer Road in Northbrook and Glenview, according to the Morton Grove and Glenview village websites.

Then they will complete additional, less-disruptive work for at least the next two weeks, and an extra 24 trains a day will be rerouted along the Milwaukee Road North Line through Niles and Morton Grove for at least that duration.

"The bridge work should continue for the next few weeks, but we have been told by Canadian Pacific the increase in train traffic (24 trains a day) will be a much shorter duration of about two weeks," Peter Falcone, assistant to the Morton Grove village administrator, told Patch in an email.

"We understand the issues this will have on residents located along the tracks, and commuters, and it is our understanding this limited inconvenience will ultimately result in fewer freight trains using the Metra line once the bridge is completed," he added.

According to the Village of Glenview's website,  the bridge must be completed by December 31, 2013, to meet an Illinois Commerce Commission order.
