Chicago River To Be Cleaned Up For Swimmers

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District says it will clean the river enough so swimmers can use it by March 2016.

 

The North Branch of the Chicago River passes through Morton Grove and Niles, and offers recreational opportunities for kayakers and canoers. But swimmers?

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago made a decision to disinfect effluent from wastewater, as reported by Medill Reports Chicago. According to the article, the disinfection will bring the water quality up to a standard to make it safe enough for swimmers.

The MWRD posted more information about the disinfecting technologies it will use on its website. 

The Obama administration ordered a cleanup of the Chicago River in 2011, according to the Chicago Tribune.
